That’s an important distinction in the Pinehurst, Southern Pines and Aberdeen area of North Carolina, where golfers can choose among historic resort hotels, golf villas and cottages, independent inns, familiar hotel brands and hundreds of vacation rentals. The right choice depends largely on where you’re playing, whether you’re traveling with a spouse or seven buddies, and how much of the trip you want packaged in advance.

For golfers building a bucket-list trip around Pinehurst No. 2, staying at Pinehurst Resort offers advantages that go beyond atmosphere. For groups sampling courses throughout the Sandhills, however, Southern Pines lodging, a golf villa or a rental house can provide more flexibility and sometimes better value.

Here’s how to choose.

Course premiums can apply to Nos. 2 and 10, and minimum stays can vary by season and package.

Resort guests also have complimentary shuttle service among Pinehurst properties and golf courses, an underrated convenience on a trip built around multiple rounds.

The Carolina Hotel is the classic choice for a first Pinehurst visit or a couple seeking the full resort experience. The Holly Inn and Manor offer smaller alternatives near the Village. For foursomes, the Carolina Villas provide four separately keyed guestrooms with private baths.

For a larger buddy trip, the Cottages at No. 8 occupy another category altogether. Four-bedroom cottages accommodate eight guests and eight-bedroom cottages accommodate 16, with common gathering areas, porches, firepits and a private putting green for cottage guests. The accompanying golf package includes daily golf, including The Cradle and twilight rounds at No. 8.

Meanwhile, more options are under construction at the Sandmines as an expansive eight-bedroom cabin is slated for Summer 2027 opening and 26-room Lodge set to debut in Fall 2027. The additions will feature a lit putting green, inviting fire pits and large outdoor gathering spaces designed for evenings spent among friends.

Best for: First-time visitors, couples, bucket-list trips and groups concentrating on Pinehurst Resort courses

The location also works well for a broader itinerary. Pine Needles and Mid Pines sit between Pinehurst and downtown Southern Pines, making restaurants, shops and additional courses readily accessible by car.

Best for: Serious golfers, Donald Ross fans and groups playing Pine Needles, Mid Pines and Southern Pines Golf Club.

Golf packages can combine lodging with rounds on those three courses as well as other Sandhills standouts, allowing groups to build much of a multi-course trip through a single operator. That can simplify one of the hardest parts of organizing a buddy trip: coordinating bedrooms, tee times and multiple courses for a group.

Current packages illustrate just how seasonal Pinehurst-area golf travel can be. Identical Talamore packages are offered at substantially different rates depending on the time of year, another reason to compare stay-and-play options before booking lodging and golf separately.

Best for: Foursomes and larger buddy groups seeking shared accommodations and packaged golf.

For a group playing primarily around Pinehurst but not purchasing a resort lodging package, this can offer an attractive combination: a kitchen and common room for the group, with the Village and golf close at hand.

One caution is important: golfers should secure their tee times before choosing a rental on location alone. Staying beside a Pinehurst course does not by itself provide the golf access associated with a resort package.

Southern Pines can also make sense when Tobacco Road Golf Club is part of the itinerary, particularly when combined with other courses on the eastern side of the Sandhills.

Best for: Groups mixing golf with restaurants and nightlife and golfers playing a variety of non-resort courses.

These hotels generally require more driving than staying at a golf resort, but that can matter little on an itinerary that already moves among several courses.

Some are also incorporated into golf packages. Current offerings through area golf packagers, for example, pair conventional hotel lodging with rounds at courses including Mid South, Pinewild and Tobacco Road.

For price-conscious groups, the calculation is simple: a less expensive room can leave more of the trip budget available for premium tee times.

Best for: Value-conscious golfers and groups playing courses throughout the region who desire some loyalty points.

Location should follow the tee sheet. A Pinehurst-centered group should look around the Village and resort golf campus. Golfers concentrating on Pine Needles, Mid Pines and Southern Pines may prefer Southern Pines. Aberdeen can work well for travelers seeking value and convenient road access.

Rather than choosing the most impressive house first, plot the golf schedule and choose the rental second.
