Country Club of North Carolina – Dogwood Course

Country Club of North Carolina – Dogwood Course

Designed by the legendary golf course architect Ellis Maples, along with Willard Byrd, and opened for play in 1963, the Dogwood Course at the Country Club of North Carolina is known for its classic design, strategic layout, and picturesque setting showcasing the natural beauty of the Sandhills terrain.

The layout features tree-lined fairways, gently rolling hills, and pristine landscaping that enhance both the aesthetics and the challenges of the course. The fairways of the Dogwood Course are meticulously maintained, providing a consistent and rewarding playing surface. The Bermuda grass fairways offer ample landing areas, but well-placed bunkers and water hazards require thoughtful shot selection. The course’s bentgrass greens are known for their smooth and fast surfaces, demanding precision in putting.

Strategically placed bunkers are a hallmark of the Dogwood Course. They not only enhance the visual appeal of the course but also require golfers to carefully consider their shot placement to avoid getting caught in these hazards. Water comes into play on several holes, adding an extra layer of challenge and strategy. The course features ponds and streams that meander through the landscape, impacting shot decisions and providing picturesque vistas.

In 2016, architect Kris Spence was brought in for a thoughtful renovation, with the goal of updating the course while maintaining much of the elements of Maples’ original design. The work included a move to Champion Ultradwarf Bermudagrass greens and ultra-playable Zeon Zoysia fairways, the only zoysia course in the Sandhills.

True to its name, the course is adorned with stunning dogwood trees that bloom in the spring, adding vibrant splashes of color to the landscape and making the playing experience even more enjoyable.
