The Rabbit Hole
February 18, 2024 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
SOUTHERN PINES – February 1, 2024 – The Sunrise Theater, along with FirstHealth Hospice & Palliative Care and FirstHealth Grief Resource & Counseling Center, will be presenting the Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning play, Rabbit Hole, by David Lindsay-Abaire, from February 16-25, at the Sunrise Theater. Sunrise Theater would also like to thank sponsors First Bank and Swank Coffee.
The play is a mature drama about grief and hope. Rabbit Hole follows a family as it works its way through the stages of loss while struggling to support each other through their pain with humor and love. Rabbit Hole is an intimate and beautiful show, both visually and dramatically: an absolute must-see, even if theater-goers might need tissues to get through it. It is important to understand that the play features the serious issue of child loss, and has other mature topics, including some mature language, mention of suicide, and mention of drug use.
Of special note is the first Sunday matinee, on 2/18, at 3pm, which will be followed by a special discussion panel with the cast along with FirstHealth bereavement counselor, Ken Stewart, LCSW, who counsels adults, children, and teens. The panel will discuss how the play deals with the different stages of grief, how they brought this very human story to life by tapping into their own emotions, and will take Q&A along with Mr. Stewart. It will be an invaluable program for psychology and literature teachers and students, counselors and social workers, and anyone either wrestling with their own grief or who knows someone who is. It will be an amazing lesson in how art and life mirror each other, how art can help people with their grief, and how grief can, in turn, inform their art.
The Sunrise’s live theater committee unanimously voted to produce this play during their 2024 season, agreeing the show is a story that’s important to tell, and was suggested by one of Sunrise Live’s in house directors, Jessie Dietzel, who lost their child, Miles Dietzel at age 5. Miles was the son of both Jessie and Kevin Dietzel, who is the executive director at the Sunrise Theater. “We have been so impressed with the cast and their ability to bring these characters to life.” Says Jessie, “They have made this process a collaborative effort, and their hard work really shines through. They have brought this family to life, and have made “Rabbit Hole” feel like a true intimate look into a family navigating their way through loss.”
Performances are Friday 2/16 and Saturday 2/17, at 7pm, Sunday, 2/18, at 3pm, Friday 2/23 and Saturday, 2/24, at 7pm, and Sunday 2/25, at 3pm. Tickets are $27.50 / $17.50
