Reimagined by Gil Hanse in 2018, Course No. 4 offers a modern take on Donald Ross’ original design. Visually stunning from tee to green, the new No. 4 features strategic bunkering, natural hazards, and a captivating layout. Hanse’s design is bolstered by the most interesting topography of Pinehurst Resort, with a shimmering lake as its centerpiece. Industry leaders were so impressed that No. 4 was chosen to host the 2019 U.S. Amateur just one year after Hanse’s redesign.
While No. 4 has been through a number of iterations since it was first built by Ross in 1919, Hanse’s version is the most stunning. With natural ridgelines defining corridors, golfers are treated to a brazen blend of sand, native wire grasses and water. Hanse’s renovation reintroduced rugged edges and a more natural aesthetic, bringing Ross’s original vision to life with a contemporary twist.
Golfers at No. 4 will encounter a dizzying array of challenges, from sweeping vistas to intricate green complexes that demand precision and strategy. The course’s picturesque setting, coupled with its rich history and thoughtful design, returns Pinehurst No. 4 to its status as a must-play destination for golf enthusiasts seeking both beauty and a true test of skill.
