Step back in time to a classic layout that has truly stood the test of time. Even though Dr. Leroy Culver built the first rudimentary nine holes and John Dunn Tucker added the next nine, it is clearly Donald Ross’ touch that can be seen on the Pinehurst Resort & Country Club’s first golf course, which debuted in 1899.
Characterized by its gently rolling fairways and strategic bunkering, this par-70 course spans slightly more than 6,000 yards, offering a mix of challenging and rewarding holes. The course’s layout demands precision and thoughtful shot placement, with undulating greens and well-placed hazards that reflect Ross’s design philosophy.
Don’t let the short-ish give layout you a false sense of confidence — No. 1 can be more imposing of a course than it first appears. Wild drives or a sloppy short game can make for a long day. As with any course bearing Ross’ name, it is ultimately very playable without losing its challenge — and a favorite for an enjoyable starting round.
Pinehurst No. 1 is beautifully integrated into the natural landscape, featuring towering pines and a serene, parkland setting that enhances the overall golfing experience. While it may not be as famous as its sibling, No. 2, No. 1 holds its own charm and historical significance, providing a delightful and memorable round for all.
