Pinehurst No. 6

Pinehurst No. 6

Course No. 6 opened in 1975 as a championship course from the design imagination of a young Tom Fazio and his uncle, George, a former PGA Tour professional and an accomplished course designer in his own right. The duo set out in to create a course that was located near the heart of Pinehurst, yet distinctly set apart in its style. The result was No. 6, an undulation track that rewards big, bold drives and requires more aggressive approach shots as well.

In 2005, Tom returned to carve in new bunkers, soften a few angles and speed up the greens, also adding wiregrass throughout the course to anchor it aesthetically to Pinehurst — increasing shot values, developing new putting greens and re-bunkering the entire course. Golfers find the terrain different here — rolling hills make for a test from the tee box. The back nine is one the most challenging in the Sandhills. Course No. 6 offers a picturesque setting with elevated tees, tree-lined fairways, and demanding approach shots.

One thing has remained true through the years: No. 6 continues to be a favorite for those who love Fazio designs.
